There are three credit agencies that collect and give ratings on consumer credit . These agencies are required by the Federal Trade Commission [FTC] to provide you with a free credit report once a year. The three agencies together provide a website and 1-800 number where you can collect you credit report. The official website for your free credit report is here.

If you need to get your credit report it is best to get it through this service rather than paying for an agency to do it for you. The FTC even went so far as to issue a warning about free credit report agencies. The agencies that provide credit reports for free that are financial counselors as well are generally trying to generate business for their other services.
